Given by the Connaught Fund, the awards support research carried out in collaboration with non-academic community partners and driven by their needs and priorities. For the 2024-25 funding cycle, the Connaught Committee made the decision to exceed its $300,000 allocation to award a total of $820,000 to nine research initiatives.

“It is a testament to the range and excellence of research proposals that the Connaught Fund will, this year, support more Community Partnership Research Programs than ever before,” said Leah Cowen, �r��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“In recent years, projects supported by this program have blossomed into established relationships that are enriching research at our university and poised to have a sustained impact on communities.

“I have no doubt that this will continue to be the case with this year’s awarded projects, which address complex challenges that range from tracking contaminants in traditional foods in First Nations to enhancing the wellness of older adults in retirement living.”

Two �r�� alumnae have been named McCall MacBain Scholars for 2022.

Janelle Brown-Walkus, who graduated with a master of science degree from the Faculty of Dentistry in 2021, and Linda Bùi, who graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 2018 from �r�� Scarborough, will head to McGill University in the fall to study dentistry and public policy, respectively.

Their outstanding achievements, skills, potential and character landed them the prestigious awards, which founders John McCall MacBain and Dr. Marcy McCall MacBain modelled after the Rhodes Scholarship. Six other �r�� graduates and students received runner-up awards.

Brown-Walkus says she is looking forward to studying for her doctor of dental medicine on her way to a career improving oral health care for Indigenous communities.

“�r�� developed my dream to become more than just a practising dentist, but to work in policy,” she says. “I was so thrilled to hear about winning the McCall MacBain Scholarship. It means a lot to me because I wanted so much more than just the curriculum and hands-on training. I wanted to have an environment where I can thrive and become a leader in dental public health.”

The �r�� has announced the winners of the 2022 Awards of Excellence, a prestigious program presented annually in collaboration with the �r�� Alumni Association to recognize outstanding faculty, librarians, staff and students.

The �r��’s Faculty of Dentistry has won the prestigious 2021 William J. Gies Award for Achievement – Academic Dental Institution from the American Dental Education Association ADEAGies Foundation.

The Gies Awards recognize individuals and organizations that epitomize the highest standards in oral health and dental education, research and leadership.

“This award recognizes the immense contributions that our faculty members have made over the years to improving the health of so many,” Dean Daniel Haas said. “Just a few examples of the numerous scientists who have had impact include David Locker, Christopher McCulloch, Paul Santerre, Barry Sessle, Dennis Smith, and George Zarb.”

A leader in research excellence for more than 140 years, the faculty’s global impact dates back to 1907 when graduate Ashley Lindsay was acclaimed as the founder of modern dentistry in China. Known for its multidisciplinary research culture, the faculty's impact can be seen through the contributions of its many leaders in such diverse fields as biomaterials, dental public health, implantology, pain research, periodontal physiology, matrix dynamics and more. It is also home to Canada’s largest dental clinic, linking research and clinical care with more than 90,000 patient visits per year.
