Yanqin Wu, a professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science's David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics, has been named an international honorary member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences is among the oldest scholarly societies in North America and its members rank among the world’s most accomplished scientists, scholars and artists. Wu is one of 250 members newly elected to the academy in recognition of their excellence in their respective fields and invited to uphold the academy's mission of promoting engagement across disciplines.

Wu studies the interiors of planets, the structure of proto-planetary discs and circumstellar dusty debris discs, the organization of planetary systems and the formation history of moons and satellites in the solar system. She is also exploring the evolution of the Kuiper Belt – a region of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune, believed to contain many comets, asteroids and other small bodies made largely of frozen gases.

“It is a definite honour, though there are many other scientists whom I consider equally or more deserving,” she says. “So this is more of a motivator for continuing the pursuit, and hopefully this helps me to attract good students and post-docs. Also, I’m interested in raising science literacy in society at large, so maybe this title will help a bit in that.”

�r�� professor of molecular genetics and Donnelly Centre investigator Charles Boone has been elected an international member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences for his contributions to functional genomics.

Founded in 1780, the academy is among the oldest scholarly societies in North America and its members rank among the world’s most accomplished scientists, scholars and artists.

Boone pioneered the field of systematic genetics that has transformed our understanding of how cellular processes are coordinated. Together with University Professor Brenda Andrews, he led the effort to produce the first map of genetic interactions for any cell, which revealed how these interactions form a network to influence trait inheritance. The research has implications for predicting disease risk from an individual’s personal genome – one of the fundamental goals of precision medicine.

“I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to Professor Boone on this prestigious and highly deserved honour,” said Stephane Angers, director of Donnelly Centre and Charles H. Best Chair of Medical Research at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. “Professor Boone’s contributions to functional genomics are widely known in the scientific community and they have in no small part shaped the Donnelly Centre as a leading global hub for research in systems biology.”

Professor Maydianne Andrade is joining an elite group of artists, scholars and scientists as a new member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

“I am honoured and humbled,” says Andrade, who is among 37 new international members from 22 different countries joining the academy.

“This is one of the oldest scholarly societies in North America, with a service-oriented culture that promotes the importance of working across disciplines to solve social challenges. I am privileged to be a member of a group that included Charles Darwin, Toni Morrison and Nelson Mandela.

“This is both an honour and an invocation to action.”

A world-renowned evolutionary ecologist whose expertise is on the mating habits of cannibalistic spiders, Andrade also serves as vice-dean of faculty affairs and equity at �r�� Scarborough and is a research associate with the Royal Ontario Museum. The �r�� Mississauga alumna received the Ludwik and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize in 2019 for a faculty equity education program.

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences was founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and others who wanted to honour exceptionally accomplished individuals who also advance the public good.
