In a related ranking by field, �r�� placed second globally in medicine and sixth for social sciences

The �r�� is ranked among the top five research universities in the world – and first among North America’s public universities – in the latest National Taiwan University Rankings.

�r�� placed first in Canada and fifth in the world, up one spot from last year, in the research-focused 2023 NTU rankings, which rate universities based on their overall output of scientific publications, in addition to scoring performance in specific fields and subjects.

Among global public universities, �r�� ranked third behind University College London and the University of Oxford.

In a related ranking by field, �r�� placed second globally in medicine and sixth for social sciences. This was complemented by success in the subject rankings, where �r�� placed in the top 10 globally in clinical medicine (2nd), neurosciences and behaviour (3rd), psychiatry and psychology (4th) and social sciences, general (6th).

“We are incredibly proud of the �r��’s exceptional performance in these rankings, which reflect our commitment to research excellence across a wide range of disciplines,” said Leah Cowen, vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“From life-changing innovations in medicine and technology to paradigm-shifting discoveries in the humanities and social sciences, our researchers, faculty and students continue to push the boundaries of knowledge to the benefit of the world.”

More than 1,500 universities were considered for this year’s rankings, and the top 1,000 were ranked. Based on an analysis of scholarly publications, the rankings use measures such as number of articles and citations to evaluate a university’s performance across three criteria – research productivity, research impact and research excellence.

Similar methodology is used to determine NTU's field and subject rankings, where the sheer breadth of �r��’s expertise was on full display this year. On the world stage, �r�� ranked among the top 50 universities in four of the six fields and 13 of the 27 subject areas – all while coming first in Canada in a total of 16 subject areas.

Three other Canadian universities made the top 100 in the overall NTU rankings: University of British Columbia (33rd), McGill University (57th) and University of Alberta (86th).

�r�� continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and ranked among the top 25 universities globally in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Ranking.

The �r�� ranks first in Canada and third globally in the latest National Taiwan University Ranking, which measures universities’ research output and impact.

�r�� rose one spot in the 2020 edition of the ranking, finishing in the top three in the company of Harvard University and Stanford University.

It has placed in the top five of the NTU Ranking every year since 2014.

“The �r�� is home to world-class researchers who produce impactful research and make important discoveries each and every year,” said Ted Sargent, �r��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “We are immensely proud to see our researchers’ work – as well as the work of all those who support them – recognized on the global stage.

“In a tumultuous year, it has become even more clear that research that cuts across traditional disciplinary cultures is ever more important. Tackling problems like COVID-19 and our recovery – our economic, health and societal recovery – requires the commitment and the collaboration of scholars not only from life and physical sciences, but equally from experts in social sciences and humanities.”

The NTU Ranking – officially known as the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities – analyzes the scholarly papers and research citations of the world’s top 800 universities. It scores each institution based on research productivity, impact and excellence.

The ranking relies on indicators such as the number of articles published in the last year and the average number of citations over the last 11 years. The NTU Ranking gives the most weight to research excellence, which includes the number of papers in high-impact journals over the last year.

Two other Canadian universities appear in the NTU Ranking’s top 50: the University of British Columbia (33^rd) and McGill University (49^th).

“Comprehensively excellent research-intensive universities are at the beating heart of vibrant cities, serving as magnets for talent and investment,” said Christine Allen, �r��’s associate vice-president and vice-provost, strategic initiatives.

“�r��’s Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the recent gift to form the Temerty Faculty of Medicine – the largest single philanthropic gift in Canadian history – illustrate the local and the global drawing power of community-engaged universities such as ours.”

Alex Mihailidis, �r��’s associate vice-president of international partnerships, said the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of the university’s role in addressing some of the greatest challenges facing the world.

“Crucial mission-oriented challenges, such as those that have come to the fore in 2020, spotlight the critical contributions of comprehensively excellent universities such as those at the top of the National Taiwan University rankings,” he said.

�r�� also fared well in the NTU Ranking by subject, finishing third globally in clinical medicine and in the top five in four other subjects: pharmacology and toxicology, psychiatry and psychology, social science and neuroscience and behaviour. In the NTU’s breakdown of universities by field, �r�� came in third for medicine and fourth for social sciences.

�r�� ranked first in Canada in 14 out of 24 subjects, reflecting the depth and breadth of its research.

The �r�� is ranked fourth in the world and first in Canada when it comes to the performance of its scientific research papers, according to the 2018 National Taiwan University (NTU) Ranking.

The latest ranking, derived entirely from an analysis of scientific papers produced by researchers at hundreds of different academic institutions, placed Canada’s largest university behind only Harvard, Stanford and Johns Hopkins universities. That is the same position �r�� held last year in the NTU Ranking and marks the fifth year in a row it has ranked within the top five.

�r�� also retained its title as the world’s top public university ahead of the University of Oxford, which ranked fifth, and the top-ranked university in Canada.

“These results demonstrate that the �r�� is a consistent producer of impactful, world-class research across a broad range of disciplines,” said Lori Ferris, �r��’s associate vice-president, research oversight and compliance.

“We’re proud to see the excellent work of our researchers being recognized globally."

The NTU Rankings analyze 800 universities’ scientific research papers by using eight different indicators to measure research productivity, research impact and research excellence. The greatest weight is given to the latter two categories, which includes measures like the number of citations in the past two years and the number of articles published in high-impact journals during the current year.

Two other Canadian universities ranked in the NTU Ranking’s top 50. The University of British Columbia scored the 25^th spot while McGill University ranked 42^nd.

In addition to its overall ranking, the NTU Ranking also looks at six field-specific rankings and 14 subject-specific rankings. Of the six fields, �r�� ranked third globally in clinical medicine, seventh in social sciences and 10^th in life sciences. Among Canadian universities, �r�� took the top spot in all but one of the fields.

�r��’s performance in the subject rankings was also strong. The university ranked sixth in the world in pharmacology and toxicology, 24^th in mathematics and 26^th in physics.

�r�� continues to be Canada’s highest-ranked university and among the top public universities in the world, according to the five most prestigious international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University.

Stellar research drives performance

The �r�� has once again nabbed fourth place in the 2017 National Taiwan University (NTU) Ranking – following Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Stanford universities.

It remains the world’s top public university for a fourth year, ahead of Oxford University, which placed fifth overall.

The NTU ranking focuses solely on analyzing scientific papers of the top 500 universities based on research productivity, research impact and research excellence.

“These results once again demonstrate the impact of the �r��’s stellar research across a wide range of disciplines,” said Vivek Goel, vice-president of research and innovation. “We’re proud to see the excellent work of our faculty and students being recognized globally.

“As the Fundamental Science Review highlights, this kind of research is essential for building an innovative, thriving society – and we’ll keep working with partners across Canada and around the world to ensure this ground-breaking work continues.”

Since 2007, the university has ranked between third and 14^th in the world and consistently first in Canada. Two other Canadian universities ranked in the top 50 this year: UBC (27^th) and McGill (36^th).

In addition to the overall ranking, the NTU Ranking also analyzed research for six field-specific rankings and 14 subject-specific rankings.

In rankings by field, �r�� placed third in the world in clinical medicine, sixth in social sciences and eighth in life sciences. In engineering, it ranked 50^th. In the subject-specific rankings, �r�� also performed well, placing first in Canada in seven out of 14 subjects. �r�� placed fourth internationally in pharmacology and toxicology, 26^th in electrical engineering and 30^th in physics.

The �r�� continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most prestigious international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University.

Last month, Times Higher Education (THE) ranked �r�� 22^ndoverall out of 980 universities worldwide.
